Explosive Undead Spells

Taysa calmly watched her undead minions move to engage the brother and sister Einhänder. The siblings tore into them, Almera moving back and using her psychokinetic powers, Cefiro casting a ward before hefting his blade.

Taysa proceeded to begin an invocation for a spell she crafted herself. Several of the eyes of her zombies and skeletons began to glow a bright, bright red, before the animated corpses exploded gorily in a hail of bone slivers and rotting flesh. She leapt over to the other ship, commanded her undead to cease, and stood over Cefiro Einhänder, who was looking over at his unconscious sister.

"Where is Laconium Island?"

Cefiro gasped, spat up some blood, and hardened his countenance. "If I knew, would I tell you?"

Taysa nodded sadly. "Your own body will know." She calmly killed Cefiro with a series of Enervation spells, before beginning a Speak with Dead spell.


Skeleton Shards
Necromancy
Level: Clr 2/Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 Standard Action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target: Up to one undead skeleton/4 levels, no two of which can be 30 ft. apart
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: See Text
Spell Resistance: No

You cause one or more skeletons in a 30 ft spread to explode in a hail of bone shrapnel. Each skeleton detonated in this fashion deals 4d6 points of piercing damage to all creatures in a 10 foot radius around it. Creatures caught in this area may make reflex saves (using the DC of the skeleton shards spell) for half damage.

Undead you control automatically explode when targeted with this spell. Free-willed undead, as well as those controlled by someone else, can make a will saving throw to resist the spell.

A higher level version of skeleton shards, zombie bomb also subjects its targets to potential disease.

Zombie Bomb
Necromancy
Level: Clr 3/Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 Standard Action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target: Up to one zombie/4 levels, no two of which can be 30 ft. apart
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: See Text
Spell Resistance: No

You cause one or more zombies in a 30 ft spread to violently explode in a cascade of rotten flesh. Each zombie detonated in this fashion deals 6d6 points of bludgeoning damage to all creatures in a 15 foot radius around it. Creatures caught in this area may make reflex saves (using the DC of the zombie bomb spell) for half damage, as well as they must make a fortitude save or contract slimy doom.

Undead you control automatically explode when targeted with this spell. Free-willed undead, as well as those controlled by someone else, can make a will saving throw to resist the spell.
 


I picked slimy doom because constitution damage hurts! It appears in the DMG/SRD.

Mummy rot strikes me as the ace of spades of disease and only to be used in special cases.

That's far too good for a 3rd or 4th level spell. It's an auto-pick. That would be 30d6 damage at 20th level. And 6d6 damage is too good for a 3rd level spell. And it shouldn't be a radius, it should be a spread - anyone with cover should be immune. And then there's the disease element.

As a 3rd level spell, I'd let it affect one zombie for 5d6 damage and disease. As a 5th level spell, I could go for one zombie per round. Essentially it's a fireball with interesting SFX, trading increasing damage for the disease.

You make a good point.

I guess its a no-brainer at higher levels because your undead minions are next to useless, except as battlefield roadblocks...
