I still think that the Pixie is the closest thing to the mythological faeries...

LOL ... doesn't that depend on which mythology or folklore you are thinking about.

All the faerie-kin are derived from different mythological or folklorish faeries.

Okay, I'll elaborate. I think that the Pixie is the closest thing to the faeries in English mythology. (English as in England/Ireland/Scotland.)

No, Pixies are more related nordic folklore, actually. (Check where I come from).

Leprechauns are definately Irish folklore.

Brownies are from Wales and South-western England.

The Pixie, as a creature, perhaps comes from Nordic folklore. But the Pixie that is in the Monster Manual is given properties and the appearance generally associated with the Faeries from English folklore.

(But, as kreynolds already said... this isn't a historical discussion.)

To put it another way, the Pixie, as described in the MM, is what most people will think of when they think of Faeries.

hmmm....I always thought the Pixies were misrepresentations of the Picts (a Roman title for this cultural group btw)

Sprites seem to have taken the place of Faerie though. Do Wil o'wisps count as faerie? Notice also how the Banshee (aka Bane-Sidhe) is missing from 3e DnD.

Tieflings seem faerie to me or at lease fearie. <---see spelling ;)

I disagree, the Sprite more acurately fits that.

Check your Monster Manual. There's no such thing as a Sprite as a creature. A Sprite is a classification for 3 different creature (like a Devil is a classification of several different types of creatures), including the Pixie, Nixie, and Grig.

Out of those 3, one is half-cricket (Grig), and one is aquatic (Nixie). That leaves the Pixie as the butterfly-winged, merry prankster. More commonly known as the Faerie. :)
