Faeries?

Which brings me to my point. They have a +3 ECL, although I thought their powers maybe seemed more appropriate for +2; not sure how much Flying is worth. But they have one trait that seems very hard to address with a fixed racial ECL - ALL Fairies have d4 hit dice, regardless of class. For a sorcerer or wizard, this is no penalty at all, but for a fighter or barbarian? Please. So I could see this race having a +3 ECL when the PC is a d4 or d6 class, but maybe a +2 ECL for d8+ classes? I guess this situation exists with all standard PC races, and will be even more noticeable for some monster races, but this seemed really extreme.

The guy who wrote the Mythic Races fairy mentioned on rpg.net that he had designed them to be ECL 0, and FFG tacked on the +3 during the editing process. It was his reasoning that the disadvantages of being really small, combined with the d4 hit die and the limitations on their spell-like abilities sufficiently balanced out the flight and other extras.

is all this about the "Fey" entry in the MM?

... ie dryad's, nymphs, pixies ... are all now Fey instead of Faeries

No. This is about the new Black & Decker cheese-grating-hot-chick-pick-up-machine.

I suppose...you wouldn't happen to know what issue that was...would you?

Hi kreynolds,

The issue was DRAGON 290, December 2001. Primary theme was "Dark Ages D&D."

There is some background info on the books, and then detailed write-ups and stats for: Justicar (& Benelux), Cinders, Escalla, Private Henry, Enid, and Polk.

Escalla is listed as a Faerie, 10th level Evoker. In her description, it mentions she has "natural invisibility (as a pixie)."

Hi RogueJK,

Perhaps. Keep in mind that DRAGON material is not "official", no matter who writes it, and in this case the stats were presumably provided by Paul Kidd himself (the author of the books in question); he is listed as the author of the article anyway.

...I don't recall ever seeing Mr. Kidd's name in the design credits for any D&D rulebooks.

SYLPH!

Under "elemental-kin" in the 2E monster manual, SYLPH is what *I* always used for Faerie. At least after they never converted it after the OD&D Creature Catalog.

Heck, up until 3E, Sylphs were a major race in my campaign. I'm just waiting for them and Neried to return in Monster Manual II.

Cross those fingers!
