What it says is that it swaps the area around you in a 100 ft per level radius with an equivalent area in the plane you are going to. It does not say it has to be supported. All it does is swap areas. Another use would be to dig under a castle and planar swap a good sized area to the plane of air. Leaving a good sized hole under the castle. So long as there is nothing inside the area that makes the will save, it occurs.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that the class does not have a good repeating ability(plane shift is at will at 10th level, the only class ability that improves with level is the planar area swap) theres no basis for an epic extension for the class....so im pretty much stuck with a 1000 ft radius.
The other thing with it is that the planar areas swap back in 10+class level days(so 20 days). Does this swap back all the dirt, or just the area where i originally planeshifted from?(whichis now full of air for the most part due to the ball of earth having fallen). If it shifts back the dirt, then that means that the cavern would suddenly fill up after 20 days.....and i guess shifting someone back out if they were there.
