Familiars: Does EVERYONE take the toad?

If you throw the toad, you're fine. If you launch him from a Mighty Toadbow, you have a problem.

(Anyone remember the Hammerbow from W8rmy?)

My forest gnome illusionist/rogue from a while back had a huge orange tabby (almost as big as him) named Snuffles. The cat was a travelling companion and living pillow/bedroll.

That same campaign had our fighter/sorcerer (heavy on the fighter) pirate acquire a parrot as her familiar (just used the raven speech ability)

Let's see...out of five arcane casters that have been in my games, one has a raven, one has a pseudodragon, and three didn't have familiars at all (although one probably would have gone for the raven if he'd been played past first level).
