I'd say Cat, Raven, Owl for normal familiars. And for improved ones, pseudodragons and eyeball beholderkins beats everything !

my current character has a cat who is a little fat and resembles the Chesire Cat. Her name is Amy, short, for Amethyst.

Dude, that is SO g... errrr, nevermind. :D

Toad, toad, toad. You can lick em, you can hide em, you can juice em up with a touch spell and whing 'em out of a slingshot...

Maybe it's a throwback to that old WB cartoon with the singing frog, maybe it's a throwback to Beavis & Butthead... I dunno what it is, but there's just something cool about a fat, flaccid, morose, glutton-for-punishment toad.

Back in the Spring I think, someone posted the stats fora Pet Rock. Truely priceless. I've got to write that down with my character concepts.

I've had a cat and an owl, but by FAR the best familiar is my pseudodragon. He can communicate with others telepathically, is smart enough to think, and strong enough to actually help you out in a bind. Plus he's so mischievous it makes for fun role playing!

Make sure your party has at least one flying familiar or animal companion for aerial reconnaissance.

A bat or owl is great if you need some more night vision. Otherwise I would recommend the raven because of it's ability to speak (much more useful than you'd guess!)

Keep in mind that most flying familiars (except for the bat for example) are strong enough to carry stuff like flasks of Alchemist's Fire.

Any recommendations for a familiar for a kobold sorcerer with a dragon fetish?

Because I can get both a Familiar and a Psicrystal, and I ain't got squat yet because I can't think of what would be cool enough to give the guy.

Oh, and before you ask, he's not specialized in any dragon -- very much about *all* the dragons (hence his neutral alignment and his enrgy substitution feats).

I've had sessions where I roleplayed my familiar more than my character.

Great fun.

the two favourite I've seen so far have been an imp with human as one of it's polymorph forms, that basically worked like the wizard's secretary. The other was an animated, floating halfling skull, similar to Morte from Planescape: Torment.

'course that was the familiar of the same guy who cast animate dead on some very small bats so they could fly around him and look spooky on command. They wern't any good in a fight, but you had to give the guy points for style.
