How about Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. A great book, even just to read.

If I didn't already have it, that's what I'd want.

Dragon Subscription is a great idea....as long as you have 3 months to wait for it to start.......Paizo's fulfillment company is notoriously slow, so I'd say he'd get his first issue in October. I'm NOT kidding. My gift sub from CHristmas started in March. My friend's gift sub from August started in November.

But - if you buy him the current issue and the next couple as they come out in addition - it is the gift that "keeps on giving" - every month something new to read!

If the gift receiver is not intending to use the book, then I would recommend the Munchkin's Player's Handbook by Steve Jackson Games. At only $14.95 it's relatively inexpensive and it's a very funny book.

If he's an "old school" D&D-er, how about the HackMaster PHB? It's a funny read and well-written too.
