Pathfinder 1E Favored Class in Pathfinder

I like the change to favored classes in Pathfinder. XP penalties, well, suck. The extra hit point does provide a minor incentive to chose the flavorfully appropriate class, but is not restrictive, so it does the job in that regard. It does not, however, make in-game sense. Perhaps it would be better to give an extra skill point (assuming skill points will make a return in Pathfinder, which they might) to be spent on class skills per level of the favored class instead.

Maybe being focused in a career you are most suited for makes you just a tad more lucky when it comes to taking damage. Since HPs are abstract in the first place I don't see the problem with adding a HP to those that follow their race's favored class. A skill point would not be enough of a carrot INHO.

In the Paizo boards I suggested giving each class an entry for "Favored", and list there what perks that class gives to a character whose race favors that class.

In that way, taking a level in your favored class provides a bonus and not a penalty per se? Works for me.

Sounds good to me! It does require a more extensive write-up for each class than a general benefit of +1 hit point or skill point and would need to be balanced, but it is more flavorful. It would also require the benefits not to be frontloaded.

Sounds good to me. Also each race should have multiple favored classes and each character should have to pick one. For instance Dwarves could pick say Clerics, Fighters and Paladins and elves could pick Bards, Fighters and Wizards for instance.

Pathfinder's version is better than 3.5, IMO, but my favorite version thus far is C&C's typical classes. C&C basically gives some suggestions on what classes a race will take. So, for example, an elf might have fighter, ranger, and wizard and favorite classes.

There's really no need for a favored class mechanic. Just make it a role-playing suggestion.

Yeah, this is very much what I'm talking about with C&C. I should add that C&C races get certain bonuses for certain classes. So halflings get bonuses to rogue.
