If I wanted something more linear, I would probably pick percentile dice: i.e., 2d10.

My favorite is the dice pool in Betrayal at House on the Hill. It's a pool of d6s but each die is 0, 1, 2 (two of each). Fate dice can stand in if you don't have the Betrayal games. There's a joyful simplicity with each die increasing the average by 1, the max by 2, and the min by 0.
