Favored Soul Possibilities

OK, I'm starting a Favored Soul from 1st level and I need a little advice.

In general, what is the best direction to go with your known spells and feats. Is it best to make a FA abuffer, summoner, party ballista, or something else?

All opinions and debate are welcome, as I'm mega undecided. His concept (worships Dol Dorn - Eberron god of war) is that of a drill instructor straight out of Full Metal Jacket.

Thanks,

My brother is playing one in my campaign and he's going basically as a buffer. FSs are pretty good combatants, and the buff spells from the cleric list makes him even more potent. I'd get quicken spell at 9th level so you can quicken divine power / shield of faith. Summoner would be an intriguing direction, though. Honestly, just go with what you think will be the most fun.

That is a good start.

Buffer is always good, mix a little Summoning in, and you can impact the battlefield.

as an aside, you cannot take Quicken Spell as you are a spontaneous caster, but Rapid spell should be looked at.

Well, I've stated this concept before and it has usually gotten good reviews. The only criticism it routinely gets is that it doesn't take optimal advantage of WF and WS for the deity's weapon. But, you can't have ait all.

With your spells known, you can take all the Summon Monster 1-IX, a cure (or some type of healing) spell at every level, and all the planar ally spells. That is between 2 and 3 spells per level. You have battlefield control and healing, plus a great amount of flexibility in there. You also don't need to worry about DCs - unless you decide to take offensive spells with some of those slots yet unfilled.

But, here's the thing that makes it all worthwhile. Jump into the Thaumaturgist PrC as soon as you can. Your summonings and planar ally spells get an instant power-up.

You can be a ummoner and a medic with this build. You could lkely also be a melee character -or- a buffer -or- an offensive caster with this build, but not likely any more than one of these three (without hindering you summoning, planar ally, or healing abilities).

Have fun. FS's are some of my favorite builds.

If you have the Rapid Metamagic feat (CM)... applying a meta feat to a spontaneously cast spell takes only its normal time.

You need 12 ranks in spellcraft to be able to take that feat though...

Favored Soul/Malconvoker; obviously specialized in summoning. The prereq skills for Malconvoker are cross-class for the FS but it shouldn't be too big of a problem. I'm getting ready to try this idea out.

Think about one or two levels of barbarian if you want to be a melee machine. Your spellcasting won't suffer too much (especially with one level) but Extra Rage combined with Divine Power, Righteous Might, Power Attack and Cleave... Too bad you can't use Divine Feats... but perhaps your DM allows the Paladin Prestige class from UA instead of the barbarian route? One level without spellcasting penalty gives you turn undead. The second level gimps your spellcasting a bit but boosts your saves. And CHA all the way.

Sword&Board? Divine Feats come your way with turn undead. Divine Might for damage, divine shield for more AC than your opponents will want to hit.

And for the final cheese... add DMM Persistant to the mix.

FSes suffer from MAD, so they should not be built as direct damage casters.

I would suggest that rather than taking curative spells at every level, you simply take spontaneous healing.
