So, my sorcerer is getting up there (level 17) and I'm having trouble deciding on my new 7th and 8th level spells. What are your favorite spells of 6th-9thish level, ANY source you please.

Uh . . . wish and limited wish are decent for sorcs, since you can duplicate spells with them that you might not otherwise know. I'd have thought those to be the hands-down obvious choices. Gate is pretty nifty; Gate abuses abound.

Shades, Greater Shadow Evocation, Greater Shadow Conjouration come to mind; just because they are really flexible (although occasionally some of the things you can do with them make your head hurt if you think about it too much - Shades can conjour a Magnificent Mansion .... So what happens if someone with Spell Resistance goes inside (and beats your caster level check) while people are in there? Is the food serverd healthy to eat?) and one thing a Sorceror lacks is flexibility on the spell list.

Greater Planar Binding can be good ... if you have Magic Circle Against Good, Magic Circle Against Evil, Dimensional Anchor, and some Spellcraft. Draw a diagram (take 20) in a secure location, anchor it, and summon up some help - how useful it is depends, a lot, on your charisma score and your DM, but a 16th level Sorceror (who took Greater Planar Binding for the first level 8 spell) can summon up a Planeatar, which is a 17th level Cleric..... and thus has 9th level Cleric spells available (True Ressurection for the material components - at 25,000 gp.... after a day for it to prepare the spell for you.... and an opposed charisma check against a 22 cha critter). Just make sure not to anger it too much, as it might come hunting you up....
Gate and Wish have been mentioned.
Disjunction is handy against spellcasters.
Shapechange can be nice, as it gives you access to a boatload of abilities, depending on the form you take on.
Time Stop is always good for when you just need an extra moment.
Dominate Monster can really ruin your DM's day, if he isn't prepared for it.
Most the higher-level spells are good, actually. What's the best is a different question....

I would think the xp cost for wish would be prohibitive. 5000 minimum per casting definately limits the usefulness. Especially since as a sorc you know few of your highest level spells, and if you cast many wishes, you won't be high enough level to cast it anymore. At 300 per limited wish might not be so bad, but still cast it 10 times and you loss 3k xp.

3.0 or 3.5. It's an anything goes 3.0/3.5 hybrid game. I'm almost entirely 3.0 though, so I have Greater Shadow Evocation/Conjuration at 5th and 6th level. I have Limited Wish and find it to be VERY useful. My first 9th level spell will definitely be timestop. Those extra rounds to buff will do wonders.

I'm rather partial to PaO, just for the sheer, ridiculous flexibility of it.

Shapechange is hands-down the most powerful Sor/Wiz spell. I'd say it's more powerful than Wish, even.

It gives you ridiculous defensive flexibility, and lets you fight without spending spell slots all day. For the hard fights, you still have 9th level spells to fall back on. Plus it gives you tons of flexibility to use ability drain and energy drain with the proper forms, which bypasses a lot of the survivability of high-HD enemies.

And on top of all that, it lasts for a long time. A rod of greater extend spell isn't very much, and you'll get the effects of shapechange for about 6 hours a day on the low end.

I also love chained dominate person. You go to a tavern, spend a level 8 spell slot, and you suddenly have a score of scouts/spies/laborers to patrol the city in a pinch. They can't fight, but the plan is that they won't need to.
