Favorite Holiday Movie

Funny, but I always saw it as a movie about someone, who wanted to break the cycle, and the community who both appreciated and supported him.
I have decided to interpret Mary as being the true villain of the film, because it's implied that her broken-window-wish to marry George is what caused him to suffer tragedy after tragedy that kept him from leaving Bedford Falls.

I'm in a weird place when it comes to Christmas movies. I like the honest comedy of what Christmas is actually like in Christmas Vacation and Christmas Story, but as much as they make me laugh, they don't really get me into the Christmas spirit. I want sentimentality, but not sappiness. I want comfort, but not overly glorifying the past or the status quo. I like modern mythology like Santa, but as an atheist I find the message of the importance of belief deeply problematic. That... well doesn't leave a lot of movies to choose from. Here's a few that I still love through all of that.

Arthur Christmas - An animated movie that takes the idea of Santa semi seriously, like how the operation would actually look like. At it's heart it's a story of a family passing down a legacy, and the conflicts that everyone's expectations of each other complicates things. It's a heartfelt movie without a villain and the only sentimental Christmas movie I still really like.

Home Alone and Elf - Both lighthearted fun that doesn't take itself too seriously and still feel warm and cozy.

Sadly overlooked when it comes to action movies that take place during the holidays: Long Kiss Goodnight. It has far more Christmas feel than Die Hard imo.

LKG is the only "Christmas" movie I'll be watching this year, simply because it's damn good, Geena Davis is still hot even now, and I own a copy on dvd... I don't do Christmas at all.

I refuse to watch A Christmas Story anymore - that movie is literally a biography of my childhood - right down to the crazy old relative who thought I was the younger of the two brothers and continued to send me stuffed animals and send my brother all the old metal Tonka toys no matter how many times she was informed that she had us confused for the other one ...
The neighbors' dogs never stole our turkey, but something eerily similar to almost every single thing in that movie happened to me during my childhood at some point.

And I looked almost identical to Ralphie, haircut and glasses and all.

Hehe I'm a classic gen-z, I love Elf, been watching it since I was a kid!
That was the exact moment I decided I needed a handicap placard. Jaime and I went to the show and see it, it was Thanksgving-ish, place was packed, no parking spots. 3 degrees out and we had to walk 3 football fields to warmth. I went the next day to get a tag. Now I;ll circle minimum of 3 times to get a wheelchair parking spot

Yep - hearing how he acted on the set of Community (GREAT show by the way) really turned me off to Chevy
His first guest on his il-fated late-night talk show was Beverly D'Angelo, treated her really bad and made her the butt of his jokes.... that fell flat. Was not a good look for him, we know how his late-night show turned out, they changed the theme to Taps after 1 week. Hès not looking well these days and I'm going to guess he doesn't have any gigs on the horizon

Best Xmas movie is 7, he gets a present at the end
