I did enjoy a bit of MYstara just before Greyhawk returned back in 98, a couple of sessions. Seemed like it was being tailored for the kids coming in (theoretically) from the First Quest boxed set. I didn't like the whole CD thing either, just very poor timing there. I did enjoy the world, though at the time I considered it Birthright without the "you rule this kingdom" angle. Mostly because of the art and some minor (in retrospect) criticisms that I blew out of proportion. Very bright and sunny place. GImme Scarred Lands though, bwah hahahahahahahah.

The creature crucible for lycanthropes was another standout product. I'm thinking of converting the classed werecreatures to 3e prcs for appropriate creatures.

I would love to see this! If I can ever get a hold of my copy of Night Howlers again, I want to make extensive use of it. Lycanthropes are a favorite of mine. :)

I loved the Night Howlers book! I still have it, in fact, even though I never played that particular version of D&D. I only bought second edition stuff, but I couldn't resist a lycanthrope book. I wish that much thought and effort could be put into making workable lycanthrope PCs in 3E.
Maybe if lycanthropy could be done as a class rather than a template... I don't know, it would just be nice to start as a level 1 character with lycanthropy.

It isn't wrong to download a copy if I have the original right here in my hands, is it? ;)

Best Campaign Setting?

I voted OTHER. I would have to say that my favorites are:
  • UMBRAGIA -- why write what you do not like?
  • Wheel of Time -- I still feel that the chapter Tellings of the Wheel from the first book is the best written portion of any fantasy world ever.
  • Middle Earth -- without it, none of these others would be the same as they are now.
  • The settings I sent in to WotC for the contest -- no details, please...

Spelljammer: Why do we have this thread when we can Spelljam from sphere to sphere? Given that the setting got really stupid with the Dowar (Space Penguins) and the Tinker Gnomes, otherwise Spelljammer is the best there is.

But that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

if it's possible to be wrong in an opinion, you are! ;)

no offense intended, but spelljammer was just wayyyyy to queer for me. sometimes being offbeat can be good - see the "spelljammer-lite" PLANESCAPE. but in SJ's case, it was just stupid. and not just with the space penguins. the whole concept.

LOL...anyway, I still like how it turned out. Looks like the "shovel award" went to Iron Kingdoms, Rokugen, and Spelljammer. ROFL.

Yeah, but that's not really fair, is it? I mean the Iron Kingdoms campaign setting isn't even released yet, all we have are a handful of modules.

Hmm.....I suppose between Planescape and KOK, it looks like they both hit the top as favorites.

(Albeit I think KOK got some extra strength....what would have happened if everybody went posting on the other settings' boards to gain votes, HMMMM?)

And also it seems that while FR gets a good fanbase, most I see here are sick to death of hearing about anything to do with ol' Elminster. (I have to wonder how many of you went and campaigned in alternate Realms realities to kill that poor "SOD!" LMAO...sorry I could not resist the jibe for that "I hated the cant" rant.

The cant is great, berk, and I'll slice the bonebox of any cutter who says otherwise!

Speaking of killing Elminster- in a game I have coming up, I'm planning to give the players a chance to castrate him... (we'll send one to the Simbul and one to Khelben, press-release style)... ah, when Fight Club goes to the realms... :)

But yeah, although there are people who could wax for days on the subtle differences between the settings, Greyhawk, Mystara, FR, and Kalamar all really look the same to me. Same classes, same messy pantheons, same confusion of cultures, basically the same races... no thanks. Dragonlance wasn't very detailed, but at least it made D&D MAKE SENSE. Everything seemed to have it's place- and if there wasn't a place for something, it was cut from the setting. No orcs. No psionics. The wizards were regulated, the clerics were missing in action, men were men, and silver dragons were women. ;) There was no need to have a nation based off of every fleepin RW culture. The Pantheon made sense- it wasn't a bunch of gods- it was closer to a monotheism with a hierarchy of angels in it's organization. That's what I call a setting.

Scarred Lands looks like something new and different as well. If I decide to run a new D&D campaign this fall, it'll either be Scarred Lands, Middle Earth, or Dragonlance... I have not yet decided which.

Planescape

Another strong point of Planescape: the illustrations. They're still my favorite of the whole (A)D&D line, and were a crucial factor in bringing to life not just a new world but a different atmosphere.

Tony DiTerlizzi is
