Favourite Classes through the Ages

2e Bards in many variants. My favourite: Half-elf Zauberkundiger/Rätselmeister who fought his way through night below. Also my gnome tinker/illusionist The complete bards handbook was the best splatbook of all times. Also the human ministrel knight who fought her way through night below (yes, a second second time for me)

3e mostly DMed, but i really liked my brothes halfling fighter.

4e only DMed so far^^

BECMI: - (I played a cleric but didn't really like it; I also didn't like the system: having classes that were clearly races seemed a pretty stupid idea to me)

1e: illusionist (because it was my first character - yep, I played AD&D before playing BECMI)

2e: psionicist (especially in Dark Sun)

3e: umm. I've only ever been a player for one session. I played a dwarven barbarian cleric of Kord. I don't think I have a single favorite class. I would always mix several classes to arrive at an interesting concept.

4e: PHB1 favorite: warlock; PHB2 favorite: sorcerer

Pathfinder: Haven't had a chance to play a character in this system yet, NPC or otherwise. But I love, love, love what they have done with the sorcerer.
I forgot to add Pathfinder. I haven't played it yet either, but I love what they did with both the Sorcerer and, especially, the Paladin. This is the first paladin since 1st edition that I've really wanted to play, that truly feels like a badass holy warrior.

1E: Thief/Illusionist - Loved it! I don't remember if it was even allowed, but we were kids back then, so if it wasn't I blame it on that.
2E: Cavalier - gotta love that class for the powergaming/munchkin kid back then
3E: Cleric - can do just about anything I wanted with one
4E: Sorcerer - real interesting to play - Love Wild Magic

1e - druid, then monk
2e - druid
3e - druid, then bard (fochlucan lyrist), then beguiler
4e - druid, however, there is so much to love in all of the 4e classes, imho.

BECMI: only ever played an Elf.
1e: Monks, but I never got one past 4th or 5th. The 1e Ranger was also quite nifty for that +1 dam/level vs your favored enemy.
2e: Bards, Specialty Priests, and multi-classed anything.
3e: Multi-classed anything, though I particularly enjoyed any combination of Fighter, Rogue, Monk, or Sorcerer.
3.5: same, plus Warlock and Favored Soul. There are many classes from the Complete series I have yet to see or play.
4e: Haven't touched it yet, but if ever I do, Bard or Warlock.

All editions but one, it was the same classes - dwarf fighters (or just dwarves in the old days), human wizards, and fighter/wizards (elves in the old days).

The exception was 3e, as fighters sucked, and that edition never did fighter/wizard well. You couldn't start as one and the caster level hit was too much. 3e, I'd say my outright favorite was the Beguiler, with wizard and other wizard variants right up there.

4e, back to the classics. I think it does my overall favorite, the fighter/wizard the best, and both classes rock on their own.

I'm curious, Thasmodius... how does 4e do the fighter/wizard better? Are we talking about through the multiclass rules, or through the swordmage class? I can see a valid point made for each, and I'm inclined to agree with you... just want clarification on it.

Also, dwarves have always rocked. BECMI dwarves were one of my favourite classes.

My favourite class has changed now and then over the time I've been playing 1e-based games.

It's easier to list the classes I don't play, or don't play well:

Monk (never a fan)
Cavalier (yet I love the class!)
Paladin (mostly because they're banned in the games I've played in)
Bard (we've rejigged them so they can start at 1st-level)
Assassin (I can play them OK but the party keeps killing them...)
Thief (not sure why this is; maybe it's because I've had to play so many as NPCs)

I can rock out on any of Fighter, Ranger, Cleric, Druid, MU, Illusionist. My main Ranger phase was when I first started playing. Then I got into Fighters - still love 'em! Then I discovered what Illusionists can do...loads of fun! And there's never anything wrong with playing a flash-banger MU...provided, of course, they can find the spells that let 'em bring the flash-bang... :)

As for 3e, I played for quite a while but only really had 3 major characters (thus only got to delve into 3 classes):
- a Fighter-Wizard (first 3e character, didn't realize how dumb my idea was; he stopped at Wizard-1 and went all Fighter once I learned better)
- a Ranger who played like a Paladin
- a Wizard, spec. Illusions, no evokation.

Lan-"Fighter forever"-efan

1E -- Cleric
2E - Specialist Priests
3E - Clerics and Druids
4E - Haven't played a PC yet, but I do like what they've done with the Cleric and Warlords, especially since Divine Power came out.

Hmm, I'm realizing a theme here... :)
