Oh yeah, I've seen the Tree Tokens used to escape. At fifth level, 100gp isn't terribly a lot, especially when it can mean life or death. Once in my group, when we were traveling through a dungeon, we fought a group of people in a room. One of the enemies fled out of the room into the hall after we beat the rest of them down. He then threw up the tree into the path, blocking our escape. As the fighters began to cut through the tree, he went through the dungeon, grabbed those henches we had not already killed, and was waiting for us when we finally escaped. I thought it was a pretty good use of the tree.
