D&D 5E feeling dissatisfied - need some advice

I seem to be in a minority. I say that if you are not feeling inspired by this campaign then scrap it. But have one big final quest first that ties up a few loose ends. Then take a break, plan the next one, and start again when you are ready.

If you progress with a campaign that you are not enjoying then it won't be the ultimate campaign of awesomeness. Can you live with that? I couldn't.

First, you've probably solved the issue the best way possible. You discussed it with your players directly and came up with a solution together.

However, a twist you might want to consider is that there are no gods, that the cleric has been drinking a special concoction that gives him his power. There is a special sacramental drink called "Blood of the Gods" given only to the chosen ones.

Your cleric has received small doses from childhood, and now as part of his morning prayer ritual is to drink a small amount of this holy liquid. Have the NPC cleric show up and reveal the truth shortly before revealing that the supply of the "Blood" is running out. The NPC cleric then dies horribly from withdrawal symptoms or transforms into some horrible beast the party has to kill.

This gives you an out - the spells are powered by a powerful potion, one that would kill most people who have not built up a tolerance over decades. It also gives you quest opportunities as the group seeks out more of the elixir.

The paladin could be handled the same way, or just say that in your world paladins are just a variation on sorcerers.
 

Smash it. Invading army. Asteroid. Displeased gods.

Or maybe frame the characters. Force them to flee to far away lands in order to escape the unjust accusations of bunny wrangling.
