Huh/ I never realized that you couldn't flank with a whip in v3.5. You learn something new every day.

Almost - you can flank with a whip, as long as you're the attacker.

Flanking basically requires three things:
1. Position - Character A and Character B are directly opposite each other.
2. Setup - Character B must threaten the target.
3. Execution - Character A must make a melee attack.

With a whip, you can manage 1 and 3, so you can be Character A, but you can't manage 2, so you can't be Character B.

Right, but that doesn't help the OP who wants to threaten with a whip so that an ally can get a bonus.
