Female Gamers? Are there more of us now?

Well, there are at least two more now, as I've just introduced two girls to the Star Wars RPG. (Though it cost me the patronage of my LGS.)

Wow, long thread.

In my last gaming group the women outnumbered the men: three married couples and 1 single woman. My current group is smaller - 2 women and myself, and we've just added a new guy but haven't gamed with him yet.

I'm in two groups...
Group One... Male DM with 2 Female and 3 Male players.
Group Two... Female DM with 1 Female and 2 Male players

Prior to last year... I had never gamed with a woman. It's been refreshing, fun and frustrating all at the same time. Mostly the frustration comes from playing with newbies... not playing with women.

I also recently introduced 3 women to the hobby. Two sound like they plan to stick with it.

In the first group I gamed with, I was the only girl. The guys were totally cool and helped me learn the ropes. In fact guy was even more psyched than I since before I came along he had always lost the coin toss and ended up playing female characters.

Then, I started playing with my boyfriend's group that he DMed, and there was another girl who was engaged to one of the other players. So far, absolutely no gender-related problems within the group.

In fact the only thing about being a female gamer that bothers me is that, outside of our group, I know no other girl gamers. I tell my girl friends that I game and they treat me like I'm weird. At a previous job, I let slip that I gamed and one of the other gals thought it sounded neat but then one of the older women found out. She spread a rumor that I was actually a bruja--a witch. That makes for a really strange working environment.

What city are you in that they'd call you a bruja? I'd hate having to

I am a female gamer as well. I have been gaming for about 10 years now. In most of the groups I have ever been in I was the only female. There was one other on and off but she was whiney and wanted the game to go her way. I have many female gamer friends online and I see at Gen Con, but that is about it.

Interesting reading... I do believe there are more female gamers now, and that the trend will continue. I dunno what the exact reason for this is, but I would think that better marketing strategies have something to do with it (back in the day these games were only pushed to a very small target audience).

I personally have only played with a few female gamers, and almost all of them gamed only because a significant other was involved. Once they were no longer interested in the gamer, they would usually drop gaming too.

I think I've only known two women who game because they really enjoy doing it. I dated one of them briefly. I certainly wish I knew more female gamers... I'd love to share the hobby with someone who was doing it because they genuinely enjoyed it and not just because that is what I'm doing.
