Is it just me, or do only the MALE spellcasters go for lichedom? I state this because I've never heard of a female lich in any of my campaigns or in the conversations of others.

The big bad in our last campaign was a female lich. After taking some liberties with the official time/storyline to make it my own, she ended up doing what almost nobody esle in Faerun could do...she nearly destroyed Waterdeep. I played out her machinations over 12 or so levels and put the PCs through such emotional hell that they were completely different people than when they started.

Unfortunately, luck was on the players' side in the final battle and a single undead-slaying arrow spelled the end of this, my most favored and cherished villain. Good thing, too....they faced her about 7 levels earlier than they "should" have (I decided "well, if they're gonna bum rush her, let 'em get what they deserve") and the rest, as they say, is history.

I.E. Kill their wives/husbands, raise them as vampires, and send them against the PCs in an attempt to kill them or at least put their emotions in a blender and hit FRAPPEE?! That's plain mean.

One of the main baddies in my campaign is a female lich, as well:

" Syliah herself had managed to thwart the throws of time, embracing lichdom through unknown means. Proclaiming herself the abyssal hag, she seized the region of the Firewater Trench as her own. The abyssal hag is said to cause violent storms to emerge, on the nights of lowest tides. Syliah is known to keep company with other sea hags and is credited with the formation of salt hags. Ruling each resulting coven, she is known to steal the dead from Those Above. "

Yeah, there are only a few.

The githyanki lich queen, for one.

Die, Vecna, Die, also had at least one.

The Twisted Rune in the FR has at least one, too.

Gwath in the Northern Journey. There's also one in the Sword of the Dale trilogy. Kiaransalee has several female drow lich of her (all are not banshee). There's other example, I'm just citing some well-known.

Never encountered one, but I know who my next BBEG is going to be. I had planned her as an elven mage of supreme power, but I'll probably let her take on lich status as the campaign progresses.

I haven't actually RUN one but the idea is more than palabable to me. Course it's like most NPCs, need a reason to go undeath-like.
