Fiend Folio

Mike Mearls has said that he was influenced heavily by the first edition Fiend Folio, and wanted to put as many creatures from there as feasibly possible into the new Monster Manual. Given that we have the berbalang, dark creeper and dark stalker, death knight, ettercap, githyanki, githzerai, grell, grimlock, hook horror, iron cobra, mezzod(a)emon, slaad, and probably some others that I missed as well, I can certainly believe that.

So hey, I haven't made a poll in awhile. Tell him and the other designers which "fiends" you want to see in the next monster book. Nominate anything you like from the original Fiend Folio (1981) and I'll put it in a poll. Please keep it to 5 nominations or fewer.

I choose to nominate the Aarakocra, Bullywug, Kamadan, Scarecrow, and Sons of Kyuss.

I leave it to other people to nominate the real winners, like the Cifal, Protein Polymorph, and Tirapheg.

I second Sons of Kyuss and Scarecrows. Those were some awesome monsters. I'd also like to see Demodands, Eyes of Fear and Flame, and Yellow Musk Creepers.

Edit: Hmm, according to the following post, demodands weren't in the Fiend Folio. Okay then, I'll take the Hound of Ill Omen instead.

I introduced the 4E eye of fear and flame--which development renamed to the "flameharrow," I believe to avoid confusion with the eye of flame beholder--in "The Ashen Covenant" article.

Hey all!

I would really like to see a Sons of Kyuss entry that actually encompassed Kyuss himself as a powerful epic level threat.

I know we are getting Demogorgon in Monster Manual II, but I think adding a few more epic threats as the books scale up is a must.

Also can we have some random monster tables in MM II, say a d20 table per tier per environment/location.

I've been able to sneak a couple of Fiend Folio monsters into adventures, too. The norker shows up in H2, along with the needleman reconcepted as the arborean.

A few other creatures started out as mechanics, then received major flavor makeovers. For instance, the qullan became the foulspawn berserker. The designed version floated around for a bit and then found a home in the foulspawn entry. I'd still like to do a version that keeps the original name and flavor.

I'd love to do the spawn of Kyuss and bullywugs. I also posted my take on the adherer and the blindheim over on my WotC blog. If I knew how to work the Intertubes better, I'd format them in HTML for easier posting.
