Or how about the Orcwort. A Colossal tree that uproots itself and plants itself near a village, creates pods that drop off its limbs and grow into orc-like humanoid plants, which in turn invade the village and carry off the helpless villagers to be devoured by the maw in the trunk of the massive tree. When the entire village has been consumed, the tree uproots itself and finds another settlemet. Good lord there are some cool monsters in here.

I agree about the templates, though as an old-school Dragonlance fan, there's something just not right about a Death Knight who doesn't have an innate Power Word Kill ability.

Orcwort isn't new. It was converted from a previous edition :)

I beg to differ... The Orcwort is brand new for 3e and brand new for the MM2 (it did appear in Dragon a few months ago as a preview to the MM2). I wrote up the Orcwort after getting the direction from Jeff Grubb to create a colossal static plant with mobile servant goblin-like children. I decided against making it static and preferred orclike fruit-servants rather than goblins. Jeff Grubb agreed and the Orcwort was the result.

So now I know what an Orcwort is, but what's a fiendwurm?

By the way, the image of the Phoenix . . . *makes Homer Simpson-esque gurgle* I love Todd Lockwood art.

A fiendwurm is a normal earthworm transfomred by demonic magic into huge monster with a portal to the abyss inside its stomach. It is constantly in agony it can relieve only by continually gobbling creatures up and sending them through the portal in its stomach to the Abyss

The fiendwurm was also one of my 'boyz' -- it started as a magical beast/worm with a portal to the Abyss in its belly. It became a much more nastier creature by the time it was finished.

A Fiendwurm is a gargantuan serpent with a planar portal in its belly leading to the Abyss. The portal causes it immense pain that is only subsided by consuming living things. Any creature swallowed hole must make a Reflex save (DC 31!) every round in its belly or be sucked into the Abyss with no way to come back through the portal.

It can also pull demons from the Abyss and vomit them up to fight opponents. Once killed, the Fiendwurm implodes, causing everyone within 5' to make another insane Reflex save or be sucked into the Abyss through the ensuing planar vortex. Utterly, utterly cool.
