Fighter Feature: Careful Attack

GX.Sigma

Adventurer
When you make your first attack on your turn, you can decide to attack defensively. Doing so gives you disadvantage on melee weapon attack rolls during this turn, but attack rolls against you have disadvantage until your next turn.

I have a feeling this would be really powerful. What if Champion fighters had this?

I am not sure it really helps unless the Fighter is in a last man standing situation.

What it does is effectively reduce the Fighter's damage output (and for champions is particularly bad because disadvantage will be negating all those nice Critical Hits) and encourage your opponents to hit other people instead of you. Neither of these things is particularly desirable.

It would be quite good for Rogues, Bladelocks and possibly Rangers though.

This might work better as a feat? It is basically an "Improve Dodge" action.

I would simply make it state something like:

When taking the Dodge action, when you a creature attacks you, you may use your reaction to make a melee attack at disadvantage, against that creature if it is within range.

If this was a feat, I think I would pair it with a say a +1 DEX increase.
