Fighters, Barbarians, and Exotic Weapons

Well, I'm all for fiddling with class abilities to get something fitting for the character...Kazuu, the wild elf paladin comes to mind. On the whole, I don't think it's a terribly unreasonable solution. I've done similar, but case-by-case. If it seems to work for your campaign, go with it...but then, I prefer to revise on the fly than to plan it all ahead of time.

-------------SIDE NOTE---------
That's flawed logic. What about trading MWP (throwing axe) and MWP (greatclub) for Power Attack and Cleave?

Well, Martial Weapon Proficiency, by itself, is probably the strangest feat made. They give it out like candy to a few classes (there's what, 20 or so martial weapons?), and everybody else needs to buy them one at a time. Now, if it were MWP (swords) and MWP (hafted weapons)...

End of pseudo-thread theft.

Why just fighters and barbarians?
Granted this may complicate things a bit, but any character should be allowed this. Any character may give up his best armour, for a weapon a step above his best. If you're proficient with all simple weapons, you get a martial. If all martial, then exotic. If you're proficient with only a select few, then a simple weapon is what you get.

Remember, not having Armor Proficiency: Heavy does not preclude using it, but rather suffering the penaties to far more skills. A stipulation to the trade should be that you lose the EWP (or whichever weapon you chose) when using armor in the catagory(s) you gave up. Otherwise, it seems a good trade, even if the character was never going to use the armor. They should not suffer for making a role-playing choice
