Fighting Familiar Buffs?

Ok, I know it sounds crazy, but my familiar is seeing a lot of combat lately.

Let me explain a bit. You see, he is a miniature gold dragon. Well, not REALLY a dragon, but a magical creature that looks and acts just like one. My DM explains it better than I do. He doesn't age like a true dragon...that's tied to my level advancement. It's a LONG 13 page story (my character background actually) why he has this special familiar...suffice it to say that my DM rewarded me for my long background and also took 2 of my CON points permanently in the call familiar process in an attempt to balance things out. (Ouch.)

Anyway, here is the reason for this post. Since my PC, being a cleric, gets into melee a lot the familiar is there with him too. I need all kinds of ideas for buffing the little guy up in battle. He is only 12" long and I was thinking along the lines of Enlarges, Magic Fangs, Ring of Protections, etc, etc..

So any and all ideas would be great. Permanent stuff like magic items and Permanency spells are a plus over temporary buffs of course.

My cleric/sorcerer and "Xan" thanks you! :)

(P.S. It's not really not as crazy at it all sounds...I don't actually let him melee most of the time, especially against anything bigger than a kobold, and Xan is quite resilient with good HPs, a decent AC, and great saves. Plus the Uncanny Dodge familiars get is AWESOME.)

Check out in Tome & blood...

Enhance familiar (pg 88, 3rd lvl wiz spell)
+2 to, saves, combat rolls, & AC for 1 hr/lvl

&

Fortify familiar (pg 89 4th lv wiz spell)
+2 natural armour, & 25% chance to avoid critical hits for 1 hr/lvl

Both can be permanenced (sp?)

Sweet! I don't have that book...yet. Thanks.

Anyone else want to contribute to the "Help Xan Survive Fund"?

Any spell that you could perm. on someone else could be perm'd on your pet. So that'll give you a big list of spells to pick from.

Question?

Is it possible to perm. yourself & your familiar at the same time with the same spells, that is both the effect spell (lets say see Invis) & the perm spell itself. As per the specail ability that allows your familiar to share your spell effects? If yes, would it cost more Xp? I'd look it up myself but I don't have my book with me.

Wow, what an excellent question this is. Damn, I need to know now! Anyone?

Actually, the answer just occurred to me. It would be "NO"..unless YOU personally (from your head) cast both the permanency and the spell to be permanenced. Which means you need to be pretty high level to pull this trick off. Leaves me out. :(

There are many familiar options in the book Spells and Spellcraft. They have a system for spending XP to improve your familiar.

The WoTC site has an excellent familiar buff. I believe that it is a 3rd level spell and it lets you add the Celestial template to your familiar for a one-time cost of 500xp. This gives them excellent defenses.

Derned if I can find it again, but I cast it on my cleric's familiar a couple of levels back and it's well worth it. Hopefully someone else will see this and post the link :)

Lets say your lvl is high enough, do you have to spend more XP if you're only casting the spells once (like you would on just yourself), or is XP cost based on the results & not what spell you're prem-ing? If so where does it say this?

A full explaination would be cool from anyone who thinks they have the answer.
