Final words...

Trying to use Sense Motive takes about a minute: your interaction with her was very short: you know you're operating at a penalty.

That said, she seems sincere. You didn't get any hunches about her one way or another.

After weaving through the many aisles of the library, Veyk looks for a suitable table or study carroll, preferably out of the way and only approachable from two sides or less. Once he has found a good place and sits down, he says to Zook, " Time to crack this open and see what I've been missing sleep for. "

And so begins the Examination of VI 459 L4.

Zook ,looking by this point rather flustered suggests finding a small alcove between bookshelves. " What the keep has been gong on here. That woman was some sort of Aereni supporter if not an elf herself. She was acting very strangely. Anyhow, let us see what this books says. The sooner we can dissect whats in here the sooner we can find why it was so important to be the last words of that poor thing. Be sure to search for notes in the margin or on the covers, in case he left some sort of message for us.

Zook and Veyk open the book and are plunged into a world of boredom.

This book is a collection of minutes from the meetings of Brelish command staff during the war.
For the first thirty pages, it's a long line of minutes accepted, motions to table, motions to remove from the table, motions to the previous question, motions to adjourn, motions to amend, motions to change the color of uniforms from brown to tan, motions to change the color of uniforms from tan to brown...

And then Zook starts seeing some references to "casualty conversion of the fourth valence" and "casualty conversion of the sixth valence", heavily underlined.
(Obviously this Warforged was unfit to be a paladin, , going around marking in books like this.)

Veyk, for his part, recognizes the names of a few people from long ago intelligence reports -- strategic-level magicians capable of casting magics very few people today could.

Zook, make me a Spellcraft check.
Zook and Veyk both make me a Knowledge: History check.

You've heard about "poison pill" weapons in some of your work. They were to be used only when a position (or country) was to be overrun, when victory was no longer conceivable, and when the only course of action was to die taking as many enemies with you as possible.
Poison pill weapons were usually wrapped in euphemism like this.

Zook
"Casualty conversion", particularly with all the references to onyx, can only mean the Create Undead and Create Greater Undead spells. You can also see references here to Circle of Death and Control Undead.
These are very powerful spells: as far as you know, there's no wizard anywhere capable of memorizing them any more: they were all killed in the war.

Zook gasps " This is horrible. I knew Karrnath did such things but not Breland. Unless of course, the Order of the Emerald claw has infiltrated Brelish command. Which could spell disaster. And this "paladin" was clearly on to them. I bet he had it figured out!! We need to figure out what he was doing when he died. More importantly, we need to get up the chain of command. We need to follow the leads from our interrogation. They knew why they killed him AND they could lead us to the rat .

What if Kaius or The Order of the Emerald claw have secret Necromancers in hiding this could spell danger. If they exist they may be constructing an army of corpses as we speak. After all, if the paladin was concerned with it now there must be some sort of immediate concern

Also, this could spell other kinds of disaster. With King Boranel weakening what if Karrnath has Breland ready to collapse at his death and fall into Karrnath's fold. It would be war and game over Kaius would win. We need to solve this mystery.... and I need to file tihs report to our gossip columnist and our international columnist......."

Zook continues to ramble about leads and ways to solve the mystery going back to the forge they found out about, and the scene of the murder and massive conspiracy. All the while attempting to write it as well. He begins pacing and sweating heavily as well.
