Just because a feat gives you something you desire and don't get without it doesn't make it a tax. It just makes it a feat.

The Hybrid Talent feats exist to balance the abilities of the combination of class abilities via hybrid classes. They give you something you will probably want, but the class itself doesn't give it you because it would be to strong if it did you give everything just because it's likely you will want it.

Exactly. For example: Why would anyone play a Fighter again, which is likely the favorite 4E class of En Worlders (according to our admittedly extremely unscientific polls) if they can play a Fighter/Paladin hybrid, get fighter marks/goodies AND plate armor/ paladin goodies for free?

Beyond that there ARE builds that may not want to bother with the HT feat. You can always take it later on if you want. In any number of cases it really won't do much for you at first level. Sans HT hybrids are well balanced in general vs standard single-classed characters. On top of that they have access to a feat which is usually pretty kick ass. What's to complain about?

Why would they play a fighter in plate instead of a fighter/palidin with the hybrid talent to get plate then?

It's because each hybrid class is slightly less then half a class most of the time.

And some combos can't really survive without the feat. Almost any class with light armor is bad off. Swordmage/palidin is totally worthless without either warding or plate from the feat, for instance. Heck, swordmage/wizard is pretty weak without it. Palidin/Sorcerer. Any of those builds kinda need the ac from the feat. Only kinda because there is no primal force in the rules that requires you to build a half-decent character, however. Only the whole not dieing and contributing to your party prevents someone from having a 10 in their attack stat at 30 and all.

But you're specifically outlining class combos with a WIDE disparity of armor/protection options. Obviously the cowering spellchucker and front line tankasaurus beatdown is going to have vastly different armor basics. But going say Strength Cleric/Paladin/Fighter/Warlord/Barbarian, etc. combos where general combat position is similar your arguement breaks down. If you want a squishy to be able to stand up in melee, yeah, you have to pay for it. Rightly so.

Also, Swordmage/Wizard is weak without it? What planet are you from? Warding rocks, no doubt, but isn't really necessary if you're going for a elemental blaster/controller build with things like Dimensional Vortex and Lingering Lightning as your power choices. It only becomes necessary if you want to go primary melee and/or don't take escape powers.
