Finally reading the trilogy...

I would recommend reading The Dark Elf triology first, as well. That is actually how you will find out where Drizz't comes from. It is funny after you read The Dark Elf triology then read Icewind Dale triology how different the writing styles are.

And if you are straped for cash, libraries are always free ;)

Wise words on the libraries, but I'm kinda stuck depending on a small town library here. They often don't have the things I want to read.

...And I've already started Crystal Shard and have been enjoying it so far. Too late to pick another book now. Besides wasn't Crystal Shard the first one in release order anyways?

Yes, it was. I think they are better read in publication order, but that's just my opinion.

Not sure how it works in your area, but my small town library belongs to a larger network of small town libraries that can share books with each other. So I can go online and request a book from the much larger network and have it show up at my small town local library. Works out quite well if it is available to you.

Yeah it works like that here too, but we're still far-removed enough that they can't get the books in very quick when you ask for them. By the time one arrives I've moved on to doing something else.

It's a good place to start as it was chronologically written first, although my favorite book in the whole kit & kaboodle was Homeland, the first prequel and Drizzt's birth and boyhood.

I don't think I've read the Icewind Dale trilogy but have read the prequels. Read them straight thru and then ended up with "Drizzt burnout" from reading too many of them one right after the other.

I also like the Cleric Quintet about Cadderly Bonaduce. Who I felt shoulda been used more than just a cameo here and there (unless I've missed stuff....)

In general, I agree with this. I found the first book to be decent, the next two less interesting. I don't regret reading the trilogy, but it's not something I'll ever re-read.

I always preferred the Doug Niles trilogy that begins with Darkwalker on Moonshae. I define it as a good story that just happens to be set in the Forgotten Realms, rather than a FR book trying to be a good story.

Yeah I really enjoyed that series.
