Finding a group

Skullbe

First Post
I am a newb to the world of D&D and I have just started reading up on the rules of the game from a PHB I got. I want to find a group to play with but I don't really know anyone else who is into D&D. Is there any suggestions of how I can find a group to play with?

well the most obvious answer is the Gamers Seeking Gamers forum. Another is to visit the local game supply shop. They will often host games and/or have a bulletin board of local players/Dm's looking for people. If you don't have a game shop near by, check the comic shop, sometimes they will sell game supplies and also host games and/or have a bulletin board.

Another option, though a tad more pricy, is if you can't find players, buy the other two core books, and invite your friends to game with you, and one of you DM. granted you'd all be newbies, but there are tons of resources for newbie DM's... and what does it matter how experienced or knowledgable you'd be, so long as you'd be having fun.

And yet another option is to try an online game, either one of the message board games we have here, or someplace like IRC or what have you.

If there's a university close enough for you to get to, it may well have a gaming society. Otherwise, what Kkoie said. Good luck.

All the advice you have received so far is good. I'd like to agree that you might try online gaming. It's a good way to get your gaming fix when you can't find people to play with in the real world.

Mail-bomb every "Find-a-Gamer" site there is for best results (I was forced to do this very thing when I moved here to Cincinatti). The forum on this board is a good place to start, as others have suggested; there's also the forums at

www.rpg.net

www.accessdenied.net

and

http://boards1.wizards.com/

After about two weeks I had been invited to four different games and was able to choose the best of 'em (hi Keith!) to play in. So, best of luck to ya.

I'll second the Play by Post (PbP) gaming method. Swing by the Talking the Talk forum to see what games are starting, or poke into the Playing the Game forum to see what gaming here on the boards is all about.

Oh, and you can check out the PbP FAQ linked in my sig, too, for pointers on how to get started here!
