BTW, there is at least one precedent for turning a personal spell (and a very powerful one for non-spellcasters) into a touch spell, that is Antimagic Field -> Antimagic Aura (7th level spell, thus 1 level higher for this change).

One can't help wondering why they have never bitten the bullet and properly specified a "mass spell" metamagic. They muddied the waters with their level definitions in 3.5e but in 3.0e it was pretty consistently +3 levels to make a single target spell into a 1 target/level within no two targets more than 30ft apart (or whatever) spell.

That would knock on the head at a stroke all these silly new pointless spells that WotC are making up and mis-levelling :)

That's the splat book effect.. as more and more splat books come out, you will see more and more spells more powerful than their predecessors ;)

Remember in core rules, Mass bull's strength etc are 6th level spells, and resist energy is a far better spell than the stat buffs imo.

Except that the Mass ability buffs are sucky level 6 spells. They're barely better than Prayer even when no stat boosting items are in effect. But since we're talking about 11th level characters, some other enhancement bonus will likely be in place - or the stat boost is boosting a comparatively unimportant stat. Using those spells to gauge power level is like comparing potential 7th level spells to Drawji's Instant Summons.

Antimagic Aura also removes the area effect and adds a save.
