Fire Shield

This came up last night..

I was attacked by a dragon, and hit five times.

Does the damage from Fire Shield work per attack, or per round, because the spell doesn't really specify this.

We used per attack, and the dragon sustained 68 points of damage.. That seemed a bit much, so we ruled it was once per round instead, but what should we do in the future?

I think it's per attack, but I'm not sure.

Edit: After reading the description, it seems to make the most sense to be per attack; however, I don't know how I'd rule a grapple against the fire shielded one.

It is per attack - the dragon in the above instance would have got hurt on his first attack and then could have decided not to proceed with a full attack and take a move action instead (for instance). If he proceeded with a full attack after getting hurt once he's only got himself to blame after all.

Did the DM forget that you don't have to declare a full attack and then carry it through after the first attack?

Thanks guys, quick and good replies as always!

I think the DM forgot that option, but as I said we played it as only one hit back, even though the fight would have been easier if the 68 damage had gone in ;-)
