Firearms Threatened Area

Maybe I am missing something. Tonight I ran my second ever d20 modern game. I have to drive three hours for it, so its only once a month. Anyway...

I noticed something that just bothered me to no end. Shouldn't a firearm have a larger threatened area than the normal 5 feet? I mean a polearm has a ten foot reach, surely a pistol would have essentialy the same effect, if not larger?

Its not like it takes any more effort to aim and pull the trigger than it does to swing around a halberd. In close range I could see how everyone would always be in threatened areas, so maybe thats why the rule was not made, but it just doesn't make sense to me. I know very little about real life firearms though, so I'd gladly accept an explanation why it does not work that way.

Maybe I am missing the rule, if so please tell me.

By the book (d20 Modern), any ranged weapon including firearm cannot be used to make an attack of opportunity.

HOWEVER, if you have UMF d20 you can acquire Suppressive Fire feat that allows you to threaten someone at least 30 feet or farther.
