Firefly - I think I'm starting to get it *spoilers*

In this thread, I asked what I was missing from Firefly because I didn't particular understand why it was so popular after watching the first two episodes.

Well, after watching two more episodes, "The Train Job" and "Bushwhacked", I can definitely say I'm starting to like it. I enjoyed both episodes a lot. I don't "love" it yet, but I understand better why people do. One thing that really helped, silly as it seems, is the opening narration by the Shepherd. It tells you why the war happened and why people act the way they do. Up until that point, I was wondering why the heck people acted like they lived in the old west in space.

Also, is it just me or does it seem like both episodes were written by someone else completely? The first two and next two episodes are just so different in the tone and the language used.

Anyway, I think I'm starting to "get it." ;)

Well, they were written by the same folks, but if you listen to the commentary, you find out that FOX wasn't pleased with the pilot. They wanted to lighten up the tone of the show, so they asked Joss Whedon to go back and rewrite it, and he and Tim Menear came up with Train Job. From that episode on, the show does have a slightly different feel.

It took a few episodes for me too. And now, I can honestly say, that it's one of my very favorite shows ever. I love it with a love that is pure and good.

"The Train Job" did do a good job of selling me on the series. It showcases several important highlights of the series, such as Mal's honor, Book's attitude at being thrown in with theives, and Kaylee's sweetness.

Just that line:
Book: What are we doing here?
Kaylee: Oh.. crime...

That got me hooked :)

Yeah, and it was written over the course of one weekend, which is why the tone may be a bit different.

I wonder if, after they've looked at the numbers for Galactica and the tone of Firefly now, they're not kicking themselves. I mean my two favorite shows on TV right now, Lost and BG, they're bleak. Firefly fits right in with those, but I can see now why it was such a hard sell. If you were looking for snappy comebacks from Scoobies then Firefly wasn't it. I didn't get the show either, until I started watching the reruns and actually seeing the beginning montage and music.

I'll say another thing though, that's still the ugliest little spaceship in recent memory.

She's not much to look at, but she'll make .5 past light speed ;) (something to that effect)
