First appearance of studded leather armor

I may be crazy, but I'm pretty sure the 1990 BECMI Rules Cyclopedia has studded leather......I have it on my shelf, and I'm almost certain it did. I'm out of town at the moment, or else I'd go check.

Nope, it doesn't -- I've been prepping with it for a game for a gameday in a couple of weeks.

Earliest mention I ever saw was the 1E PHB from 1978, and the White box from 1974 doesn't mention it, but that's not to say a reference from one of the supplements (blackmoor, greyhawk, etc.) didn't have it.

Quick scan of Blackmoor and Greyhawk does not reveal it. Don't have any of the other supplements to check however. Best of Dragon Vol. 1 does not have it either.

Hah! Shows how much you know. Everyone knows the Lucerne hammer is a tool used in the dairy industry and has nothing to do with nails.:p

Studded leather was added to the game in 1E for a very good reason -- that is the point at which the "naked" AC went from 9 to 10, shifting the AC of leather alone from 7 to 8, leaving one more space between it and chain mail. So AC 7 studded leather was added along with several other armor types that were not strictly needed at the time.
