He was not in Starfleet.
It was also physically B4, not Data, but had Data's memories copied if the continuity with "Nemesis" holds true. Memory Alpha tells me that Soong integrated parts of B4, Lore, and Data into a single android and then copied Data's memories to the resulting unit, but didn't complete his work of reactivation before his death. That's what they were dealing with in "Picard"; unraveling that amalgam of memories. I guess you could say that it was Data, after a fashion, but it was more a Xerox.

Honestly, the one that surprised me was Cmdr Ellen Landry, given how she died, attacking a tardigrade.

A Starfleet Academy series has been a thing talked about for awhile, and I'm interested in seeing how it'll function. While I'd be interested in trying it out in other eras of Trek continuity ... it does make sense to continue here as a new starting point. It leaves the door open for more Discovery cameos, and the Burn has given us a bit of a reset as the Federation rebuilds.

We have no indication that reborn Data resumed his career in Starfleet.
Yeah, and I have a feeling, from the context, that he wouldn't have. I mean, for one thing, he's now got an "older" body, and most of his friends have retired or are close to it. He might just want to enjoy life. Maybe he joins Geordi at the Starfleet Museum or something.

I'm quite looking forward to this (but then, I liked the far-future period more than a lot of people apparently); if anything I've seen is a downside its that apparently the role for Tilly/Wiseman is smaller than I'd have assumed it to be, but she's got another show she's going to be somewhat busy in, so I can see why that didn't happen.

So, what they did with Discovery was in line with some other Roddenberry projects, that were intended as post-apocalyptic narratives. And that's cool.

Unfortunately, in the process they actually increased the tech level - ships no longer have to be physically contiguous, there's personal transporters small enough to fit inside a comm badge, Earth put itself behind a planetary shield that protected probably the most advanced civilization in the galaxy against all comers, and so on.

That undercut the post-apocalyptic narrative.

Also, what you're talking about is essentially a political story. There's nothing wrong with political stories, but telling them from the perspective of people who aren't even fully officers is.. an odd choice.
I really wish that last season had been all about trying to rebuild the Federation, one planet at a time......oh well. Opportunity lost.

It is a lost opportunity, much as ST: Enterprise should have been about originally building the Federation one planet at a time, instead of that stupid temporal cold war crap.

However, that should be the job for an entire series, not just a final season, so I can see why they didn't do it.
