The Basic boxed set with the Elmore cover was my first D&D product. However, if I remember the timing correctly, I had both some Endless Quest books and the Fantasy Forest boardgame first.
I think that's more to do with the audience of ENworld which was a big element of the 3.x era experience, by the time 5e came out other types of sites appealed to younger gamers coming into the hobby while us old timers stuck to ENworld.Gonna be honest, kind of shocked at the tiny number of folks who entered the game through 5e. Suppose there's still half a week left on the poll, though.
Thinking this will be another one to contrast with a Reddit version. (Plus the aforementioned "which Basic set was your Basic set?" follow-up poll here...)
The first book I ever owned was AD&D 2E. I played a bit of an Al Qadim campaign, which was pretty much all the D&D I played pre-2015. The first version of the game that I actively liked (as a game system; I did like the Al Qadim setting) was 5E.Gonna be honest, kind of shocked at the tiny number of folks who entered the game through 5e. Suppose there's still half a week left on the poll, though.
Add more canes and orthopedic shoes.Oh wow, you guys are all much older than I thought.
* Changes mental picture *
I started with 5E, just a few years ago, got the 5E PHB as my first product.
