First PC Death in my 4e Campaign!

Two fatalities in my campaign so far, both strikers. One came in the Kobold Lair module at the back of the DMG and the second came in KOTS's goblin excavation room.

The party is 6 members and they have been learning but the strikers sometimes seem to forget that, although they can deal a ton of damage, they can't absorb the blows from multiple opponents. So far they do fine when the party sticks together but I think it shows that, in 4th edition, the individuals are less than the sum of their party.

I am so waiting for someone to have a story of a party being completely wiped unconsciouss (dying). With the BBEG very weak but still alive parading around them, laughing, etc.

Then someone roll a natural 20, gets up and guts him right there.

Heh. Well, ours was definitely very close to that. ;)

Killed one in a one-off game thus far. Cleric.

Died at the hands of a group of Boggles (yep- the 1e Boggles :)) and a fire elemental.

I had my first pc death in my 4e campaign last night!

I'm a pretty notoriously high-fatality dm, and the party has made it through probably close to a dozen sessions without a death. Finally, last night, in an intense "jump from floating log to floating log across a river while under massive fire" combat, we finally had one.

I was starting to worry that 4e's lethality rate was too low for our taste. Glad to see that I was wrong- and I'm also really happy that it looks like pc deaths are most likely in serious, hard encounters.

Please tell me your secrets!

Our first session to try out 4e the week it came out ended in TPK. We were running the adventure at the end of the DMG and the white dragon had his way with us. In fairness, none of us had picked a defender, and there were only 3 PC's, so yeah.

The Irontooth encounter in KotS was a near TPK... two fatalities and the party only survived, because the cleric managed to get back to consciousness with a natutal 20, when only the Warlock was (barely) standing. ;)
That encounter is brutal.

However, it's a sixth level encounter and, according to the DMG, it's way too hard for first level characters. I wouldn't use it as an indicator of 4e lethality.
