Fixing Monks.

You might find something you like in the Monk database (see my sig), but as you may imagine, there have been lots of different approches. What kind of "fixes" are you looking for?

Actually, your signature was the thing I was looking for. I'd seen it a few times, and hadn't ever bothered to really read through it, or remembered who's signature it was.

The fixes I'd be interested in would be making it slightly more competent at the role it was "designed" to do, and less all-over-the-place in terms of abilities and concepts. When the Handbook suggests that you never take more than six levels of the class, it is a pretty grim sign.

Martial artists don't use vets, they do it to themselves in training...without anesthesia!

Well you could take a look at the Pathfinder monk for starters.

Me? I'd give it full BAB for starters. Grant it proficiency in all martial weapons, and allow him to use them as monk weapons. Give it proper Slow Fall as the spell instead of the gimped version it has now. Make the 1/day abilities like Dimension Door and 1/week Quivering Palm usable a bit more often - perhaps base their uses off of the monk's Wisdom modifier. Allow him to raise or lower his shields, er, Spell Resistance, as a free action. Replace the poison immunity with something useful - another bonus feat might be good.

1. Give the monk an unpenalized robilars gambit at lvl 1.

2. 20/x5 on criticals when unarmed (i.e. No weapons of any sort, including monk weapons other than unarmed strike).

3. Kai - 2 points of kai per level + wisdom. Each use of a monk special ability (including spell resistance, dimension door, poison resistance, tongues and so forth) consumes 1 pt of kai.

4. One of: Spellcasting as a paladin (must be lg) and an apprentice cohort at lvl 6, spellcasting as a ranger and an animal companion, spellcasting as a hexblade (may not be good) and a familiar, or access to feats of an equivalent level fighter (i.e. Weapon Specialization) and a bonus fighter feat every fourth level.

I second this.

Also:
- disease immunity should include all diseases and poisons (just lump them together and forget "non-magical")
- they have ki, give them UMD or at least UPD as a class skill
- eliminate all "fluff" requirements (like being a certain race or worshipping a certain gawd) from all alternative class features / substitution levels and allow them from all WOTC sources
- somewhere in the mid-levels, give them Wis to attacks and damage
