I see nothing wrong with half-races... Elrond is a half-elf and he's awesome (books and movies).
I been playing with the idea of having different kinds of half-elves. One more human-like and one more elf-like, with different physical characteristics for each, and maybe different ones for culture as well. So you could have:
- human-like halfelf raised in human society... +1 listen, search and spot, +2 racial bonus vs enchantments, +1 skill point/level, favoured class any.
- human-like halfelf raised in elven culture... +1 listen, search and spot, +2 racial bonus vs enchantments, +1 skill point per level, proficiency with swords and bows, wizard favoured class
- elf-like halfelf raised in human culture... lowlight vision, +1 listen, search and spot, immunity to sleep spells, and with favoured class any.
- elf-like halfelf raised in elven culture... lowlight vision, +1 listen, search and spot, immunity to sleep spells, proviciency with swords and bows, wizard favoured class.
The player would have to choose one at 1st level, depending on what they wanted out of the character. It's a bit rough at the moment, but I'm still working on it.
