Keeping the negative level is MUCH worse than losing a level.

But it's a lot less bookkeeping, and they're probably going to Restore the Negative Level sooner or later anyway.

I guess the way I look at is bass-ackwards also. I do as a couple of the others have posted in regards to using the negative level instead of level drain. Then it applies for the rest of their time in the wilderness or till they can rest properly in town. Then they have the option if they didn't make their fort save to do some soul-searching Since i require every pc to have a diety even if only in passing do they make any claim to them, they are allowed another throw on a weekly basis if they spend time in a temple to thier diety. This plays on the horrible encounter that the undead left them with. I could go on about the lack of restoration/ raise dead/ resurrection spells and ability to bring some one back, but as they say TAP
