Without fluff in my gaming I might as well just sit down at night and read a college algebra textbook.

Hear, hear! Crunch of some kind is important to keep the game from breaking down, but I don't value crunch for its own sake. Good fluff, on the other hand, is worth its weight in gold.Wombat said:With rpgs, I want fluff. Rules are fine, but many times rules are interchangeable. I have had discussions many times with players about whether a given setting would work best under GURPS, D&D, Ars Magica, or some other set of rules -- the setting was more important than the rules, thus we wanted to make sure the rules served the setting, rather than the other way around.

Crunch is like the bread. It's important for structure, to hold everything together, but boring by itself. Not many people would be interested in a sandwich whose only ingredient is plain white bread.
Fluff is like the peanut butter, which supplies the flavor and is the main reason for eating the sandwich. But without bread to spread it on, it's a bit harder to eat, and much more difficult to serve to other people.
