Flying and unbalancing parry..

First Post
The following situation came up recently:

An enemy is flying 2 squares up, and wielding a weapon with Reach 2. It tries to stab a Ranger who is on the ground, and misses. The ranger expresses a wish to use Unbalancing Parry to move the creature.

The ruling as follows: per forced movement rules, you can't force a creature to move up or down. Therefore, no matter where the Ranger moves the creature, it will be 2 squares up, and thus will never be adjacent to the Ranger. Thus the Ranger cannot slide the creature into a square next to him and the power is unusable.

Is this fair/correct? Are there any alternative rulings here that people would use?

This is correct..

I don´t know the rules for flying, but i thought if you damage the flying beast it had a chance to fall.. have to look it up..

Monster Manual has some rules but nothing on damage or forced movement..

DMG has more rules but again.. nothing..

This seems like a good place to apply the "what's the most fun for the players?" house rule, even if the official rules won't let you slide him down. I'd have allowed it on the basis of general coolness. When in doubt, I find that I have the most fun if my default answer is "yes."

By the book, though, it probably isn't possible.

You couldn't use the power even if the monster -could- be slid, OR was two squares away on the ground.

The range of the power is Melee 1. An enemy two squares away is out of the range of the power to begin with.

However, if the range was Melee 2, or was otherwise in range, even if you couldn't slide the monster, you could still apply the other effect of combat advantage.
