D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

Last played in 1992. Came back with 5E in 2014 and I've been playing 5E pretty much nonstop since then. I did give Fantasy Age a try, but I didn't like the 3d6 mechanic as much as I thought I would. I'm about to try Tales of the Valiant; but overall, I'm still pleased with 5E.

My initial read on 2024 5.5e is that it took what 2014 5E was good at and watered it down and then doubled-down on a lot of the complaints about 5e (e.g. overpowered PC's are now even MORE OP).

I started with Basic and AD&D in the early 80s. Played off and on through college, then stopped for a while. I joined a 3e group for a while in my 30s but found the combat encounters a drag, plus it was a pretty long drive (the host lived a few towns over). I did play over a dozen lengthy campaigns of Neverwinter Nights (which used the 3e ruleset) using the DM Client with several long-standing groups. I bought the 4e books and read them but they didn't draw me in enough to go through the effort of starting or joining another group.

I started playing again with 5e using a VTT (Fantasy Grounds) about five years ago, and have been playing ever since. I added a second group a few years back and just recently started an in-person 5e game at a local game store. One of my virtual groups just switched to the 2024 ruleset.

I've taken a look at Pathfinder (got the 1e and 2e sets from Humble Bundle), and one of my players has suggested one of the 5e alternatives (I don't remember which one at the moment), but I'm getting old and I don't want to get my systems confused. Also, it's super-easy to find replacement players for 5e.

With that out of the way: So you rediscovered D&D via 5E. My question is Did you then stay with 5E? Not necessarily exclusively, but just did 5E hold your interest? For how long?
If you left 5E, what did you leave it for? After how long? For what other game(s)?
Left D&D after Living Greyhawk was ended. Though I tried 4e for about 4 months and went away.

Stayed off all tabletop RPGs into a few years into 5e, about 2018, as I tried to get my kids into RPGs. Our group has kept going.

We’ve stayed with 5e though I have pushed other near-D&D systems like Worlds Without Number and Ruins of Symbaroum. They’re not even motivated to try older D&D. They’re strongly embedded with DnDBeyond to organize their characters they can’t budge.

I keep trying!
