For you lawyers and wannabe lawyers

Hi. I'm a lawyer, but unfortunately I don't know anything about intellectual property law.

I decided to take a break from my scum-sucking to interject before Mistwell comes in and starts suing people for intentional infliction of emotional distress...

I spent my morning on two cases.

I'm fighting an insurance company on behalf of a client who lost his leg when an uninsured motorist plowed into him. My client was on his way home from work and stopped to assist a stranded motorist.

I'm also trying to keep the State from pulling an Albanian kid's driver's license for getting two tickets within two years [eight days later and he'd be fine]. He loses that license and he loses his job.

So tell me: what have you done this morning?

You're wasting your time trying to protect our noble profession, JPL. It's an image problem that goes back at least as far as the Romans. There are plenty of good people who are lawyers, but then again there is a reason I teach instead of practice.

BTW - I consider it extremely rude to pile insults onto lawyers on a post title that calls for lawyers to answer it. Start your own OT post "Why I hate lawyers" so I can avoid it at least. ;)

Bummer when someone tries to ENFORCE the laws as they sit on the books.

As for what did I do this morning? I obeyed the law as opposed to trying to weasel around them.

Tell me again, Doc: is the problem with lawyers the fact that we do illegal stuff or that we do immoral stuff?

Legally, this kid deserves to get his license suspended.

Morally, I think the right thing to do is to try to keep this kid employed and off the streets.

Which is why I'm doing this case for free.

Lawyer fees in general have grown at a rate at LEAST 10 times the rate of inflation. My mother went through a nasty divorce 25 years ago and it cost her less than $1000 for all fees.

Trust I am not going to stop smearing lawyers any time soon. They plain and simple deserve every ounce of it.

And law school tuition has outpaced starting sallaries by a factor of 10 to one as well. You want to pay my $100,000.00 in debt incurred to get a law degree?

Not that this is on topic... so...

... Imag as a TM should not infringe on iMAC as a TM, especially since they are in seperate industries. Now if Imag where to cover Apple related software or industry trends, that would be anouther issue.

I didnt determine the cost of law schools, so what is your point?

Also I think the big issue here is would the magazine survive if Apple decided to make it an issue. The financial cost whether or not Apple was right could easily kill the magazine.

Maybe some of us prefer to have one standard of laws that apply to all of us equally. Im sure in the end you will get him off. Here in the Chicago area Ive seen jerks with 5 or more speeding tickets in a year get off with nothing more than supervision because they milked the system by brining their lawyer.

I think the point is that someone who has invested three years and 100K obtaining a law degree [to say nothing of the four years and thousands of dollars earning an undergraduate degree before law school] has made a huge investment --- and that's why lawyers are so expensive.

And you still haven't told me how you spent your morning.

Bear in mind that you need to top "Helped amputee Good Samaritan."

Hey guys, can we lighten up...just a little? We all know that most lawyers are good people. Most gamers are good people too.

So relax....I suspect kicking back and having fun is why you came here in the first place :)

I probably should keep out of this thread, but as a lawyer I feel compelled to respond on a few things to DocMoriartty...

First, I am sorry that you have had bad experiences with lawyers. As a litigator, I know that the system is expensive and litigation is time-consuming and difficult.

On the recovery of legal fees/costs issue, in general it is difficult to recover legal fees and/or costs in a litigation, although it depends on the type of litigation you're involved in. If you've had lawyers guaranteeing that you'll recover your legal fees or costs from the other side, that's probably bad advice.

I don't know what profession you are in, but I would hazard to say that there are people here on these boards who have had bad experiences with someone in that profession. It's unavoidable. However, that does not give one cause to tar the entire profession as corrupt swindlers.

The U.S. (and most other civilized countries) are nations ruled by laws. Those laws have to be enforced by courts, and those courts need lawyers. You may not like the system, and you're welcome to voice your dissatisfaction, but it's the system we have.

Again, I am sincerely sorry that you have had bad experiences with lawyers. If you genuinely feel you have been wrongly treated, I would suggest you contact the state bar in your state and discuss the matter with them. The state bars take lawyer misconduct very seriously and will investigate your complaint.

Enough said...

That is part of the damn problem. Take a nice small font say 6 and use both sides of a sheet of 8x11 paper. Do you have any idea how tall a stack of those sheets (using both sides) would be needed to record all the laws you excessive bastards ;) have inflicted on us?

Lawyers are a beaurocracy all unto themselves, they self perpetuate more and more laws which require more and more lawyers who then charge larger and larger insane fees.

Yes there are respectable lawyers in this world. Unfortunately the last one I read about was John Adams.
