forget celebrity gamers, we may have a political gamer!

Getting back to the gaming angle, anyone could run an adventure where the leaders of a town or even a country are acting strangely. Possibly because of the interference of spell casters or the replacement of leaders by doppelgangers.

Traficant, the not so smooth criminal

I actually want to comment on this thread, because I had the um....privelege?...of sitting in on Traficant's ethics subcommittee hearing last week (I intern in Congress) when he attempted to defend himself.

That quote about Russel Crowe was only the tip of the iceberg. That guy said so many off the wall comments about his own rectum (i kid you not), about mob stereotypes, and about all sorts of things that I would have probably said he was crazy and an idiot if I didn't see him handle the subcommitee and the press on his own.

To put it in gaming terms, Traficant would have an 18+ Cha and Int, but a bloated ego that gives him an effective 4 Wis.

Also if he were statted for D&D, Traficant's hair (which looks like a mullet twisted inside out) could be some sort of new creature or maybe just a well concealed familiar (granting the Alertness feat).

Later,
C.I.D.

if he's not insane, i'm voting for him for president in 2004.
i kinda feel sorry for Bush, cause he's an idiot. But in 2004, anyone that is breathing would have abetter chance of winning the election than he does.

And I am not saying that because I hate the guy- it is the economy that is killing him. True, he inherited a bubble economy from Clinton, still riding the dot com stocks, which fell right after he left office, and the 9-1-1 attack reeally put him in th egutter- what with the increased spending and cut backs and all.

But looking at superficially (which is what everyone is doing) Clinton had a great economy with a surplus. Bush takes over and the country goes into a recession.

If you ask me- Democrats have to mess up pretty badly to botch this one...

Back on topic:
everyone is a gamer- or at least a RPer. Look at the masks and role playing everyone puts on when we go to work. PR tells you how to act- and this is what you need to say... and blah blah blah.

We all play a role

I don't know much about US politics, but I'll tell you this...

Here in Canada, politicians absolutely *will not* say anything that could be construed as "unusual", they all sound exactly the same when they speak (Center-Right Free Enterpise...no matter which end of the politcial spectrum they sit at).

I quite like the sound of this Traficant guy. He sounds colorful. he sounds dynamic.

I also really like Minnesota's Governor Ventura.

In the past I have had some choice things to say about the US (both complimentary and derogatory depending on the subject), but I'll tell you this...

When two candidates (Repuiblican and Democrat) wouldn't stop discussing then-President Clinton's sex life at every town meeting, debate or all-candidates meeting--no matter how often they were asked--the citizens of Minnesota voted in a straight-talking Pro Wrestler.

I knew, at that moment, that the US --for all it's faults--was the most free country I could imagine.

If there are any Minnesotans on the bard, Ihave a question: How is Ventura doing?

He is (was) a very interesting and surprisingly effective force in Congress.

I don't think you can say American politics tolerates that much strangeness. Our politicians might seem a bit more diverse than Canadian politicians (from your own perspective), but many politicians who want to remain viable and have a chance to further their career beyond a small congressional niche must constantly seek the middle (if their party's is in power) or their own slight of center position to the left or right (if their party's out of power).

There are some outliers to that trend, but generally any good politician knows that they have to assume a role most pleasing to their constituents. Perhaps the US tolerates a bit more latitude to its public servants, but then again what the heck do I know?!

As always IHMO,

---Oh incidentally anyone remember McCain's constant use of Star Wars terms in his (regrettably) failed 2000 campaign? He made himself out to be Luke Skywalker fighting the Empire (GOP leadership). Kind of kooky, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Ventura stated recently that he won't seek a second term. He's going back to private life after the gubernatorial election is over and the new governor takes office early next year. It's good that he kept his promise to be a one-term governor; for all his faults, Ventura kept the big promises and that's more than most can (truthfully) say of themselves.

While politics are a no-no here, I'd hardly call this much of a political discussion...well at least not yet, LOL.

Certainly...an interesting guy...yeah...

And isn't it "Maximus Decimus Meridius" ?
