Forgotten Realms...

Those of us who complain about high fantasy/low intelligence munchkinism in FR and similar settings sound so elitist because we *are* the elite.

Kantrip, you misspelled 3133t. Hope this helps!

Elite?

I really hope that either you are typing this with your tongue so firmly implanted in your cheek that it is poking through or that you're only 15.

Um, we're talking about D&D, aren't we?

LOL. I'm kickin' it old school. I don't go in for any of them new-fangled spellings, but thanks for thinking of me. :D

I only bag on Eddy G because FR is so friggin' stupid it is painful. It's not all Eddy's fault, part of the blame I gladly heap upon TSR/WoTC and most everybody else who ever contributed material to it. But Eddy is the source from whence all munchkinism flows. ;)

"Sophisticated gamers" wouldn't touch Elminster and his like with a ten foot staff of the archmagi!

Actually, I don't diss on D&D for being a system for munchkins and losers, like many of the White Wolf or Chaosium (etc.) devotees are inclined to do. The D&D system can be used in a fulfilling non-munchkin manner when interpreted through the eyes of sophisticated gamers. It's not so much the system as the people playing it. I happen to like D&D and d20 very much.

Are we talking about the same friggin' game?!?

D&D has been 'mish-mash of hackneyed Tolkienesque rip-off' from day one.

and makes one wonder if you're the elite of gamers, how bad are the others?

I wonder if...
a) anyone here has ever heard the proverb "If you can't say anything nice, then say nothing, or
b) it is possible to have a thread about Forgotten Realms without it deteriorating into a flamewar.
I find the setting quite good. It has lots of space to roam around, a long and interesting history, and a diverse cultures, for every adventure or character idea you can make up.

Why are you (or we) "the elite?"

Wow, Kaptin: you are a real master of diplomacy there, aren't you?

What I think many people seem to have ignored in this thread is that it doesn't matter if the NPCs were built according to the standard DMG rules (which are already munchkin, IMO, but that's not really the point, because it's the baseline.) What matters is the cultural phenomena which is Forgotten Realms. FR has attracted munchkins in greater proportion to other settings, because it's design facilitates them. The campaign is now old and established. Therefore, re-releasing it under the 3e flag and claiming that "we did everything according to the book" on FR doesn't change the fact that the setting is likely played by more munchkins than other settings, and that the proportionate numbers of munchkins in FR is also probably higher.

Of course, that's all based on my subjective definition of munchkin and anecdotal evidence from my own experience, so it's hardly a scientific analysis of any kind...

*Nightfall sits in a comfy recliner, as Barconius and Dar'Tan walk up and both eye each other critically and with very apparent vemon* *Nightfall motions to the two of them to sit* Enjoy the show fellas. *Both sit but uneasily* NF: So Dar'Tan who do you think is the better speaker here? DT: Mm, *gives Nightfall the "You're a dead man look"* I'd have to say it's a pretty useless thing going on here, debating about such things...but I favor this Kaptian fellow. He seems very authoriative. *Barconius snorts "It would figure a foul creature of shadow like yourself would favor such a fop. Myself I like the more well reasoned arguement of that Green Knight gentleman there. He at least attempts civility. Something you know nothing about, you conniving dishonorable son of orc." Dar'Tan snarls and start the motions to a spell, as Barconius readies a spell.
*Nightfall intervenes" Boys, no fighting the thread. I just got the floor waxed.

This intermission is brought you by the Divine factions. We favor peace, cause we've already done the War thing. ;)
