I've only used the realms post-ToT / 3e, and I've been pretty happy with the 3.x Realms books, with only specific exceptions.

However, that said, I seriously enjoy the 2e Realms books that I've read, simply for the level of detail in the writing that generally exceedes the level of 3.x books and isn't as seemingly cluttered with as much crunch.

I'm not all that familiar with 1e Realms material, but what I have seen has been alright, but not all that spectacular compared to the 2e and 3e books.

The ToT was the crossover event that symbolized the change from first edition to second, was it not?

I loved the post ToT, 2nd ed. version of the realms, I still use most of my old sourcebooks for my current 3.5 ed. Realms campaign.

The 1E boxed set is great stuff. The fluff from 2E is also pretty good (TSR's 2E FR adventures are truly teh suck, however). My favorite is the 3E FRCS, though. The 3E fluff is fairly good, too.

Didn't vote - I prefer my own tweaked version of the Realms in which there WAS no Time of Troubles, and certain other facets are subject to editing as well (underdark as a paralel prime, no super-competent npcs, no chosen, no 18th level bartenders, etc).

I remember really liking that 1e FR box. Even though my brother (the DM) didn't let me read it for years.

I lost interest in the FR sometime during 2e.

Okay, not to go on too big of a tangent here, but why is there an aversion to the Time of Troubles?

I'm confused.

I think it has to do with magic going all wonky e.g. wild magic, dead magic, no divine magic etc. and gods dying/being replaced/portfolios shifting. [Although I may be wrong]

Personally, I like all phases of FR but I am currently running a campaign in 3.5 FR.

I think it gets a bad rep for really being a visible effort for game designers to change game mechanics "in world."
