Forked Thread: Goodman IS going GSL!

Yeah the web can be tough but this used to be one of the friendliest places around, lately the tone has changed. Less and less people seem to be respecting Eric's grandmother.

I don't believe people deserve respect based on amount of time posting

That.

If you think I said something wrong, address it. I was speaking conversationally; this finicky nitpicking and implications of ignorance is rude, I don't care if you have one post or are Crothian.

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is a prime example of why ENworld is a barren wasteland to me. A guy who hasn't been on these boards for 6 WEEKS comes in here and acts like this to a guy who has been here over 6 YEARS (and was with me on rec.games.frp.dnd before that). Psion is an icon of these boards, and a Review Moderator for heaven's sakes, and he gets treated like this?
While you do have a point buried in there, I have like 3 times as many posts as you, so you don't even exist to me. :p

I'm sorry but why should people get respect depending on the amount of time they have been here?

I'm not pointing this next statement at anyone in particular, but all it means is that they've been registered since that time and haven't got themselves banned, nothing more.

People earn my respect by the posts I read, inparticular if they seem mostly unbiased and willing to except both views of an arguement and are polite about their own views.

Perhaps I wan't clear in my statement. I agree just signing up and posting lots doesn't automatically mean you deserve respect.

However, if people who have been a member of this board for more than a few weeks actually READ the things Psion has posted in all the time he's been on, including a lot of insightful and constructive posts, then they should know they aren't talking to a n00b putz when they reply to one of Psion's posts. Not only that, Psion is not just some guy who ran up a post count without being banned, he is a Review Moderator and (IMO anyways) a valued member of the boards and a proven asset to this community.

Lighten up, Francis.

No one deserves any more respect for being around longer, not that you have any idea how long I've been around (ftr: since before the split junior).

So, you shouldn't respect Psion for how long he's been around, but I'm supposed to be impressed by the fact that you have been around since before the split? Condecending and hypocritical to boot! Nice!

Face it, you were rude, you were called on it, and your response was... to be even more rude. It doesn't matter to me when you joined or how long you've been around "old man", you were/are acting like a jerk, and it just underscores my point of how the tenor of these boards have changed in the past year.

It doesn't matter to me when you joined or how long you've been around "old man"
Then why did you bring it up?

When I joined (I have no clue how long ago... it's somewhere near by post-count), people didn't talk about other people's join-dates or post-counts, because nobody cared. It was great, and made this place so attractive to a new player like me. We had a huge influx of people in the last year, and something has changed on EnWorld (not for the better) that leads older posters to look down on newer posters. It has got to stop*.

*Disclaimer: I've been suspended for 3 days for exactly this kind of behavior, and I deserved it. So I include myself as needing to nip this disturbing trend in the bud. But it does, in fact, need to stop.

Then why did you bring it up?

Re-read my post, specifically where I conceded that I didn't make my original post clear, and that I agreed that a join-on date in and of itself should not automatically command respect.

Now that you have re-read and understand what I was saying, maybe everyone can stop belaboring the idea of who-joined-before-whom and agree that people who join any messageboard and within days start being rude to others who have been on the board and contributing thoughtful, meaningful and constructive posts for years are bad for the forum? It's not just this guy and this one remark, but a systemic problem that has gotten worse and worse over the past year.
