Forked Thread: HF vs. S&S gaming and rethinking my priorities

Either that or...

Just say, "Look guys, I want to try and do something a bit different..." And then simply say that characters can get X kinds/amounts of equipment and mundane stuff (food, bags, etc) is "as much as the character needs". The treasure/item score at the end of the adventure just goes to pay off whatever random thing the character spends their off-time doing: maintaining a house, a business, gambling, whatever.

Of course, I don't know a thing about 4E, so it might be a bit more difficult to pull off. *shrug* But at least up through 3.x it's not especially difficult.

This is exactly what I had in mind. Basically, the game itself would run off of the treasure parcel system in the abstract, but the picture would be blowing the score from last adventure during down-time and arriving for the next adventure newly broke.

I'm sure you know this, but in case you don't: The Conan RPG game actually does this, exactly. It just comes out and says "Your money is gone" at the beginning of each adventure.

But again, I would emphasize what someone else has said: Talk to your players. Ask them if this style is cool with them, if they'd like it. Otherwise you'll end up with a PC who doesn't care about blowing money, or someone who isn't motivated by the promise of gold, and one player who wants to Save the World. Gauge their interest in your style.
