I have an irrational hatred for gnomes, bards, half-orcs, half-elves, and drizzt-clones Of those, I allow only bards in my campaign...

Ok, I have to ask. Who has actually had a Drizzt-clone in their game?

I have been running games for 10 years now and have never encountered what I'd consider a Drizzt-clone.

My criteria would be: Drow of good alignment, Ranger, scimitars, possible panther companion.

The closest I've seen was: Drow, good alignment, paladin raised by a church as an orphan. No outcasty-ness, no emo-attitude about his people.

I hear the comment drizzt-clone all the time on boards, but I find it hard to believe it's encountered that frequently. I see far more Legolas clones than Drizzt ones.

4E. Drow. Ranger (Beastmaster build with a panther companion). Unaligned. Hand Crossbow and Dagger wielder. Not an exact clone, but built to be a clone by the character's player.

When I played / DMed at a local comic book shop / flgs there was a guy who played a copy of Drizzt in EVERY game. He was a good guy, but since I couldn't stand Drizzt we didn't game well together.

Well, they were never Drow, but we had one player who ALWAYS played an Elf Ranger duel wielding scimitars (over 3 campaigns). He ALWAYS searched for magical scimitars (like Drizzt's) and a wondrous figurine of a panther (or at least a big cat).

He was straightforward about them being Drizzt clones, since Drizzt was his favorite character...

Never had the perfect storm mix. We had a good drow wizard (outcast), a female half-drow ranger (but bastardsword/short sword, and yes, played by a girl also) and a drow paladin of Corellon (with purple eyes).

Oddly, the closest to a Drizzt clone I ever saw was a half-elf ranger with two short swords. He didn't look like Drizzt, but the guy sure PLAYED him similar!

8th grade, my friend made a half-elf ranger, favored enemy Drow, who fought with two scimitars.

. . . I don't recall if he had an animal companion. I don't think so. Did rangers even get animal companions back in AD&D?

This conversation actually has come up with my groups more than once.

Never has anyone I've played with had a Drizzt clone, nor have they ever seen it.

But, yes, we/they have played drow...an entire party of evil drow in city of the spider queen and a drow brother and sister pair on the run along with a svirfneblin and druegar who became an assassin squad that systematically took on Return to the Temple of Elemental evil.

But never a Drizzt.

A question, though. Hasn't come up in my group, but what if you actually played Drizzt.

I mean, maybe making a party of the iconics from FR, perhaps even using their stats from the books, as available.

Would that count? I'd guess no, but others' opinons may certainly vary.

Is that any different from playing a "clone"? Is it less annoying (or more, or the same)?

3.5E, Mystara setting, no drow so it was a shadow elf ranger with two scimitars, feline companion. The miniature was even a Driz'zt mini. He got offended when I chuckled at him making a Drizzit clone.

This was even after he was told about Drizzit clones.
