Forked Thread: The Drizzt Clone

I had to check your "location" to see if you were one of my high school chums (you ain't). All through high school (grad '93) we played with a never-ending cycle of dual-wielding drow rangers (and Tasselhoff clones). There was always at least one drizzit in the party, played by one of us or the other (I was the Tasselhoff guy, not the drizzit guy).

My name is Cor Azer, and I've played a Drizzt clone... intentionally. He was an outcast neutral good drow ranger wielding twin longswords (2E rangers didn't get penalties for such), but he was albino as opposed to purple eyes. No animal companion, although he had a set of bracers of the blinding strike. Junior high didn't lead to the most original characters in my group (a Tasselhoff clone was frequently in seen as well).

Haven't seen it, though it did make me end up not using either drow PC I've come up with.

Although neither of them is the slightest bit Drizzt-y. Both were Clerics, one a CG priest of Corellon Larethian who was well-liked, well-respected and had not one whit of angst; the other a CN with E leanings priest of Vhaeraun with a penchant for flamboyant, badly-thought out plans, whose thoughts on acceptance by surface dwellers were basically 'Bah, losers can deal with it'.

And yes, the DM tried to call Drizzt on both of them. XP

They've both become NPCs in the campaign I'm currently running.

The only drow I really played was a fugitive on the run for murdering a Lolth priestess. He had a fairly strong illusion that made him look like a Sun elf. To compensate for his light blindness, the drow pretended to be blind (while wearing some heavy duty sunglasses disguised as blackout glasses).

This was in a freeform online game. Alas, it ended before I got to reveal his secret.

...My criteria would be: Drow of good alignment, Ranger, scimitars, possible panther companion...

I've seen it too many times to mention in online chat-based RPGs.

One of my earliest 2e PCs (I was a freshman in HS?) was a good drow (drow were just so powerful back then!) who dual-wielded scimitars. I think I was a Fi/MU/Th. No kitty. I made the PC in just a couple of minutes and played him once before I'd realized what I had done. Before the next session I went through the Complete Fighter looking for a new weapon (katana, which was the king of melee weaponry in 2e). And changed my alignment to N/E, thankfully the party paladin never thought to detect evil. :p

More recently my niece came to me wanting help with a Drow PC. She wanted to be a "good drow assassin-type". The more she talked about it, the more drizzt-like she sounded (down to having a panther-companion named shadow). I managed to talk her down from the ledge (her PC is a C/N drow cloistered cleric of Lloth | swordsage who sometimes flips out and kills people).

Don't get me wrong, I like Drizzt! I think he is a great character. My only issue is that people come original (or at least semi-original).

Drizzt isn't the only character I've seen "cloned", just one of the most prevalent.

I've never had a Drizzt clone imc because I squash the hopes of those wanting to play one.

There are no Drow, half-Drow, semi-Drow or pseudo-Drow pcs in my campaign.

Edit: That said, I have considered running a completely Drow campaign, but I like the default of things to be a little more 'normal' than that.

I had a player that wanted to play a Drow Ranger with a panther pet. I said it was ok. But, then before the game started he switched characters. I never asked why. I guess other people in the group griefed him for wanting to be like drizzt.

Yeah I my first PC was Raistlin Majere, Basic DnD Magic User. Ahhh the joys of rolling for your spells, 1st level: Shield, 2nd level: Tenser disc. I was a dagger thrower extraordinaire! We also had a Sturm BBlade, IIRC. One PC from every class in the book but me and Sturm were the only clones.

In my defence, apart from LotR, my first fantasy book was War of the Twins. man I loved (and still love) that cover with the 2 black robed MU's fighting!
